The Master Strategist of the “Invisible Stitch”
My education wasn’t found in a classroom. It began in the 3 A.M. Curriculum. Before the sun rose, I was a child translator in fluorescent-lit welfare offices. My mother, though illiterate past the 2nd grade, was a master strategist. She taught me that the system was “designed for dependency,” and she showed me how to find the Invisible Stitch—the art of navigating the bureaucracy without being trapped by its seams.
The Bookie’s Ledger
My paternal grandmother provided the counter-lesson. As a bookie, she ran a world of precision and accountability. She never missed a bill, she held life insurance on everyone, and she lived by a mantra that became my foundation: “Women are nothing without money.” I didn’t just inherit their stories; I inherited their steel.
